A.1 Introduction to the ETIS Trustworthiness Framework¶
This appendix consolidates the trustworthiness concepts presented throughout ETIS into a practical reference framework. Its purpose is to provide a single location where readers can review the trustworthiness pillars, evidence expectations, lifecycle relationships, governance considerations, and maturity concepts that appear throughout the book. It serves as a practical reference for evaluating systems, preparing reviews, assessing maturity, organizing evidence, and defending engineering decisions.
In ETIS, trustworthiness is not a feature, a score, a slogan, or a release label. It is a lifecycle property that emerges when evidence, governance, reviewability, observability, recoverability, security, accountability, human oversight, transparency, understandability, repository memory, and stewardship operate together. A system may function and still not be trustworthy. A system may pass automated checks and still not be trustworthy. A system may produce impressive AI-enabled behavior and still not be trustworthy if humans cannot explain, govern, observe, recover, and own the outcome.
The practical test is blunt: when a consequential claim is made about a system, can responsible humans inspect the evidence, challenge the assumptions, understand the authority, evaluate residual risk, recover from failure, and identify who owns the next action? If not, trustworthiness has not yet been established.
Practitioners may find this appendix useful during planning, readiness reviews, operational assessments, governance activities, and stewardship discussions. The chapters introduce and develop these concepts; this appendix provides a structured reference for revisiting them.
A.2 Trustworthiness Pillar Catalog¶
The ETIS trustworthiness pillars are cumulative. They are not independent checklist items. A weakness in one pillar can undermine another. For example, poor traceability weakens reviewability; weak observability weakens recoverability; unclear accountability weakens human oversight; stale repository evidence weakens stewardship readiness.
The pillar catalog below defines each pillar as a professional engineering concern. The table should be read as a reference map: each row identifies the question a team must be able to answer, the engineering meaning of the pillar, the typical evidence that supports it, and the failure signals that reveal maturity gaps.

A.4 Trustworthiness Evidence Architecture¶
Trustworthiness claims are only as strong as the evidence that supports them. Evidence must be contextual, risk-proportionate, reviewable, current enough for the decision being made, and owned by responsible humans. Documentation volume is not the same as evidence quality. A large repository can still fail as evidence if artifacts are stale, inconsistent, unlinked, or not used in decisions.
Evidence should answer five questions: What claim is being made? What evidence supports it? What assumptions remain? Who owns residual risk? What decision or next action follows? This claim-evidence-risk-owner-action pattern appears throughout the review architecture presented in this book and should govern trustworthiness evidence as well.
All evidence in the ETIS trustworthiness framework is expected to be linked, current enough for the decision being made, reviewable by qualified humans, and owned by responsible parties.

A.5 Repository-Centered Trustworthiness¶
The repository serves as the engineering witness. It preserves the evidence that makes trustworthiness inspectable. Repository-centered trustworthiness does not mean turning the appendix into a GitHub tutorial. It means that important engineering claims should have durable evidence in realistic repository locations so future reviewers, operators, stewards, and students can reconstruct what happened.
Repository paths in this appendix are illustrative examples. Organizations should adapt repository structures to their own environments while preserving evidence quality, reviewability, ownership, traceability, governance, and stewardship.

A.6 Review-Board Relationships¶
Review boards are challenge mechanisms. They exist to prevent confidence from outrunning evidence. Review boards do not create trustworthiness by ceremony; they inspect whether trustworthiness claims can survive professional challenge.
A review board should not merely ask whether a template is complete. It should ask whether the evidence is sufficient for the risk, whether assumptions are visible, whether authority is controlled, whether humans can intervene, whether recovery is possible, and whether ownership is explicit.

A.7 Trustworthiness Maturity Progression¶
Trustworthiness maturity describes movement from working software toward professionally defensible systems. The levels below are not a certification ladder. They are a practical diagnostic model for asking where a system is strong, where it is weak, and what evidence is missing.
A team should not claim a higher level merely because it has artifacts. The question is whether those artifacts are current, linked, used in decisions, reviewed, and owned. A stale runbook or unread review record does not create maturity.

A.8 Trustworthiness and AI Governance¶
AI does not weaken the need for trustworthiness. It increases the need for it. AI accelerates artifact production and may participate in workflows, but generated output and agentic behavior remain proposed or bounded delegated behavior until verified, governed, monitored, and owned by accountable humans.
TThe governing rule remains stable: AI proposes; engineers verify. When AI behavior becomes integrated, operational, consequential, state-changing, or difficult to inspect, the verification burden increases. Trustworthy AI-era engineering requires context governance, delegation boundaries, human oversight, auditability, rollback or revocation where appropriate, and evidence that decisions can be reconstructed.
